The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle is no stranger from criticisms from both the press and the public. After all, she’s been a member of the British royal family for more than a year now and has been an actress before that.
But it seems like the negative press for the Duchess shows no signs of slowing down just yet. The 37-year-old former ‘Suits’ star is once again facing criticisms after her recent appearance at the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
Just a Selfie
According to news outlets, Markle, who came to the event with two female friends, had a photo ban placed during her appearance. The Duchess’ security team reportedly approached various tennis spectators to not take pictures of her.
One of those who were told off is a man who appeared to be taking a not-so-sneaky close up photo of the Duchess with his smartphone. But it wasn’t the case as it turns out. It soon became known that the man was actually taking a selfie of him and the tennis court in the background.
Despite being on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, Archie, in May, Markle reportedly went to the event to show support for her friend Serena Williams who was participating in the games. She came with two of her friends from her university days, Genevieve Hillis and Lindsay Roth.
Other Complaints
But it seems like the rather awkward incident isn’t the only one that occurred that day. According to Sally Jones, a media consultant who was sitting in the same row as Markle’s party, she was tapped by a man and was told not to use her phone to take pictures of the Duchess.
In reality, though, Jones was actually zooming in on Williams. Meanwhile, an official at the event has also come out to describe Markle’s visit as a ‘nightmare’.
This latter claim seems to have been refuted though as an All England Club representative told Insider that the visit was a ‘privilege’ and that she is welcome to attend the tennis tournament.
Next Appearance
Soon after the incident, the Duchess was spotted at Wimbledon again. This time she came with her sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and Pippa Middleton, Kate’s younger sister. The Duchess of Cambridge is a patron of the tennis tournament and has previously appeared with Markle at the event last year.
Angela Mollard, a royal commentator, described the joint outing as a ‘masterful PR move’ by Kate. The two Duchesses have been previously racked with rumors about a supposed rivalry and a rift between the Cambridge and Sussex camps.
