Most people know comedian Ellen DeGeneres as the bubbly host of the popular daytime talk show ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show‘. Through her success as a host, the 61-year-old became one of the most recognizable and likable faces in the entertainment industry.
And with it, the image of the ever happy and dancing comedian was also attached to her. But does this public persona match up with what DeGeneres is like in real life?
Playing a Character
Well, according to her other half Portia de Rossi, there’s more to the comedian than what meets television audiences’ eyes. The ‘Arrested Development’ actress says that DeGeneres is much more complicated than she appears on television and that she has a wider range of emotion off camera.
DeGeneres herself confirms this and has said that while the talk show is all her, she also plays a character of a talk show host in front of the cameras. Like most people, she says that she also goes through bad days and stated that there are downsides to her chipper and always nice public persona.
Because she’s now known as the ‘be kind’ girl, DeGeneres says that she feels like she can’t do anything unkind now especially in public. The comedian even feels conflicted about honking her car horns if ever she gets angry during traffic.
‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ first aired in 2003 and has won numerous Daytime Emmy Awards since. It currently has around 3,000 episodes as of May of 2019.
Not a Dancer
Regular viewers of ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ know that dancing is one of the most integral parts of the show with its host usually beginning each episode by dancing her way through the studio audience. So, it’s surprising when DeGeneres revealed that she isn’t really much of a dancer and that she just dances as a joke.
In one of her comedy bits, she even said that she regrets ever showing off her dance moves on her talk show. Unfortunately, after doing the second and third episode, she knew she was ‘locked in’. What’s worse, DeGeneres says that she often gets asked by fans to dance whenever they meet her outside the show.
Using Profanity
Starting as a stand-up comedian, it must have been extra difficult to DeGeneres to keep her language squeaky clean for her daytime show. After all, it’s a given that she can’t say anything that may upset or offend both viewers and the show’s sponsors. Judging from the longevity of the show, the comedian has gotten quite good at watching her language.
But that doesn’t mean that she’s sworn off cursing altogether. Fans of hers can witness her letting some bad words out on her Netflix comedy special, ‘Relatable’.
