Being a television personality watched by millions every day, ‘The View’ host Joy Behar can’t escape the public’s scrutinizing eyes. And that’s exactly what happened when she returned to the show after a brief absence.
Right away, people noticed that there was something different about the 76 -year-old host: she was wearing sunglasses on set.
Post-Surgery Protection
While not totally a drastic change to her style, Behar explained the reason behind her new accessory on the show.
Apparently, she was absent the day before because she had to get cataract surgery for her left eye. It’s not unusual for doctors to recommend their patients to wear an eye patch or other forme of eye protection. Behar opted for sunglasses.
According to Mayo Clinic, cataract surgery involves the removal of the eye’s lens after being clouded by the illness. The procedure is a pretty common and safe operation so it’s not surprising that Behar was able to come back into work right away after hers. She even went on to say how her surgery went fine and recommends others to get it as well.
According to statistics, the vision problem affects around 24.4 million people in the United States in the 40 and above age group. It becomes more prevalent among people aged 80 and above and is slightly more common among women than men.
Recovery Period
Cataract surgery recovery usually takes about eight weeks, according to Mayo Clinic. However, it could still differ on a case to case basis. In Behar’s case, the intense studio lighting that she needs to deal with while working on ‘The View’ may cause some delay in her recovery.
What more, audiences may be seeing more of Behar’s Gucci sunglasses on the show as the host is set to eventually get the surgery done on her right eye, too. Fortunately, it seems that the show’s viewers and co-hosts have been nothing but supportive of Behar’s condition.
Some viewers even took to Twitter to complement the host saying how stunning she looks wearing the sunglasses. Others also wished for her quick healing. Meanwhile, her co-host Whoopi Goldberg was also positive about the change and said that she looks ‘very French’ wearing them.
Health Advocate
Behar is no stranger to health problems being a health advocate who has previously worked with WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease to raise awareness about heart disease.
The cause is close to her heart as her own mother has suffered from the condition for many years before her death. As Behar shared, her mother had her first heart attack at 50 and spent the following years of her life on various medications to cope with the condition.
Going further back, the host says that both of her mother side grandparents also suffered from heart disease.
