Although Athens is the central city of Greece, it is not so advanced when it comes to “going green.” The metropolis city is advanced in infrastructure, and the lifestyle is awesome there. But there are certain abandoned public places that need renovation. This Greek airport is one of them.
Located at the hilltop of Westcoast Athens, this airport was left barren some 23 years ago. Now, the Greece government is planning to transform it into a cultural hub and an amusement park. According to officials, the initial steps (of changing this barren land into a coastal park) will begin in 2023.
However, it is essential to note here that this airport was once the gateway to Greece. But later on, the government left it abandoned because of its remote locality. According to the early reports, the old airport was located on the top hills of Westcoast Athens.
This means that the airport was away from the city of Athens. Passengers would have to walk for miles to get to the airport. That is why the Greece government decided to make it an empty barren land.
Thus, this international airport of Athens was left barren in 2001 when officials decided that Athenians did not need it. Now, the government is thinking about making it a coastal park. In turn, this will serve Athenian as a cultural hub, playground, and giant amusement park.
Furthermore, reports tell us that the early construction of the amusement park will be kicked off in early February 2023. The constriction will cover an area of at least 600 acres of land. Thus, the airport will be transformed into a giant park.
The 600 Acres Park Will Change the Course of Athens
Apart from serving Athenians, this park will also help drive more tourists to the ancient city of Greece, experts anticipate. They argue that once this park becomes operational, the great city of Athens will be transformed into an all-green.
Consequently, this will help Athenians cope with the climate change crisis. Plus, it is also essential to note here that this coastal park will open a new era of tourism in Athens.
Since there are many barren lands in Athen, the city is prone to climate change. Once operational, this park will add to the city’s climate resiliency. In the summer of the outgoing year, an unprecedentedly hot climate was witnessed in Athens. And experts assume that the city lacks green landscapes. Therefore, climate change is becoming apparent in Athens.
This park, once operational, will make Athens more resilient to climate change. On top of that, this 600 acres of land will offer local Athenians an opportunity to get entertained and enjoy the diversity of their culture.
