When you think about retirement planning, we bet you spend most of that time approaching the concept with a financial perspective.
The greatest worry of baby boomers as they approach retirement is whether or not they would have enough money to sustain a decent living for their own selves, which includes the ability to have a permanent living space, an adequate healthcare plan, and enough to put food on the table.
However, although they are worried about having the right insurance, they are not nearly as prepared to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Just think of it from this perspective: if people simply maintain a healthy lifestyle after retirement, they may not even need an expensive insurance plan. Although it is very difficult to ensure a healthy life after the age of 60, we do believe the following steps can help you in becoming a bit healthier, especially in those post-retirement years.
Get The Right Shoes
You may not realize the importance of having the right kind of shoes at a younger age when your feet can tolerate uncomfortable shoes, but wearing uncomfortable shoes in old age can be a very painful experience.
Hence, we recommend investing in a good pair of sneakers, and the reason why we are recommending this is that we want you to go out on a long walk (approx. 30 minutes long) at least thrice every week. Your goal is to increase the distance you walk by around 10% on a weekly basis, although this is not important. As long as you are walking for at least 90 minutes every week, you should be fine.
The Art of Balancing
Losing balance is one of the core reasons behind many old age injuries, and that is why it is essential that you practice maintaining your body’s balance even if you don’t have any problems with it at this point in time.
The best way to practice this is to stand on one leg for approximately 30 seconds with closed eyes for as many times as you can. The more you do it, the better your balance will become in those later years of life.
Revise Your Breakfast
We are least conscious about what we put in our body at breakfast time even though it is the most important meal of the day. Although you may not experience any negative side effects of having an unhealthy breakfast at this point, those eventually manifest in old age.
Hence, it is strongly recommended that you consume a healthy breakfast, which means cutting down on your sugar intake as much as possible and consuming healthy foods such as fruits, protein powder, and also a milk substitute like almond milk.
De-Stress in a Healthy Manner
There are many ways of releasing all that built up stress in your body, but it is important that you choose ways which don’t cause any harm to your physical health.
The harmful ways of releasing stress are consuming alcohol, indulging in unhealthy foods, and also smoking. Instead, you need a stress-release mechanism which you can carry forward into your old age, such as meditation.
If you don’t know how to meditate, then that is not an issue as you can simply download any meditation app on your smartphone and follow the guidelines. Meditating for even 10 minutes in a day can bring a noticeable difference in the way you deal with stress, that’s for sure.
Get Involved In Resistance Training
You are bound to lose a lot of your muscle mass as you age, and so it is very important that you involve yourself in resistance training because you need to maintain that muscle mass as much as possible in order to perform basic motor functions.
You don’t necessarily have to join the gym. Simply get a few dumbbells and train with them at home. The important part is that you need to keep pushing your muscles so that they don’t become redundant and hence disappear.
