It seems like ‘Bad Blood’ singer Taylor Swift can’t truly get away from drama after all. Recently, the 29-year-old musician has been involved in a new spat. This time going against big-time entertainment executive Scooter Braun.
Luckily, Swift is also backed by other known artists. One of the most recent ones to show support is ‘American Idol’ winner Kelly Clarkson.
Singer to Singer Advice
The 37-year-old singer offered some advice to her fellow hitmaker through Twitter. In the tweet, Clarkson told Swift to re-record the songs she didn’t own the masters to.
She suggests she records them like the originals but sell them along with new art and some other form of incentive for her fans to buy them instead of the first versions. And to prove a point, Clarkson told the singer that she herself would buy the new versions.
Clarkson joins other celebrities like model-actress Cara Delevingne, ‘Me!’ collaborator Brendon Urie and singer Halsey in coming to Swift’s defense.
Meanwhile, Swift fans encouraged Clarkson to sign a Change.org petition encouraging their idol to re-record all of her six albums. Some of them even cited examples of other musicians doing something similar. They mentioned the English rock band, Def Leppard, who ‘covered’ some of their own songs note for note so they could get better record sales.
Swift hasn’t responded to the tweet as of latest.
New Drama
Swift’s new troubles stem from Braun getting control over her musical catalog after he successfully struck a $300 million deal with Big Machine, the singer’s former music label. According to sources, the pop star was never given the chance to own rights to her music.
Upon hearing the news, the 29-year-old singer wrote a lengthy Tumblr post expressing her disgust about the situation. What more, she also accused Braun of ‘manipulative bullying’. In the end, Swift described Braun’s ownership of her music as a ‘worst case scenario’.
Swift’s lawyer, Donald Passman, has also released a statement about the situation. According to Passman, former Big Machine head Scott Borchetta never gave his client the same chance to buy her masters or the label itself in the same way that he gave others to do so. Instead, the singer reportedly had to sign a deal which bound her for another 10 years to the label so she can buy the masters or the label.
‘Bending the Truth’
While Braun has yet to respond to the accusations, Borchetta has come out to say that Swift is actually ‘bending the truth’. As the music executive claims, he gave the singer the opportunity to own her music assets and that he wasn’t aware of the alleged bullying she suffered from Braun.
Borchetta worked together with from 2006 until he left Big Machine last year to switch to Universal Music Group.
